Week in Review: High Temps and Record Grants

Temperatures soared in the Los Angeles area this week and so did grants awarded by the Rancho Palos Verdes City Council.

Hot temps

Things in the Los Angeles area heated up this week as into the 90s Thursday. The National Weather Service predicted the heat wouldn't last and temperatures did cool down as the week ended. It shouldn't get too hot this week, the Weather Service predicts, with temperatures remaining in the 60s this week—68 on Monday.

Council O.K.s thousands in grants

Despite a tight budget, Rancho Palos Verdes City Council , including $80,000 for a new Peninsula High Pool at Tuesday's meeting. The biggest grant went to the Peninsula Pool Campaign, which needs to raise $2.1 million by June 1 to replace a 40-year-old pool. Grants also went to Pet Protectors League, Shakespeare by the Sea and Norris Center for the Performing Arts, among others.

Tsunami siren system

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors to be filed on the feasibility of a tsunami siren warning system at Tuesday's meeting. If a tsunami struck Southern California, maps show that cities would be vulnerable to tsunami waves.

Murder suspect wheeled into court

David Viens, of Lomita, pleaded not guilty Monday to murdering his wife, who disappeared about 17 months ago. He was wheeled into a downtown L.A. courtroom to answer charges stemming from his wife, Dawn's, disappearance. He in late February.
