Thanksgiving Bounty by the Numbers

Which state offers the most turkeys, cranberries and sweet potatoes? Patch takes a look at the Thanksgiving food supply.

Since the 1600s, families nationwide have gathered to give thanks while enjoying a feast that later became known as Thanksgiving.

As the holiday now approaches this Thursday, about 248 million turkeys are predicted to be raised in the U.S., which is up 2 percent from the number raised last year, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Minnesota has raised the most turkeys this year.

America is expected to produce about 750 million pounds of cranberries, according to the department, and Wisconsin is expected to lead all states in the production of cranberries.

Last year the country produced 2.4 billion pounds of sweet potatoes, with North Carolina leading, according to the department.

Last year, here in California, New York and Ohio provided lots of pumpkins, with each state reportedly producing at least 100 million pounds.
