Sisters of Slain Wife of 'Survivor' Producer Drop Guardianship Bid

Bruce Beresford-Redman is accused of killing his wife, Monica, in Cancun. Her sisters were trying to become guardians for the couple's two children.

The two sisters of the slain wife of former "Survivor" producer and Rancho Palos Verdes resident Bruce Beresford-Redman have dropped their bid to replace their incarcerated brother-in-law's parents as guardians of their late sibling's children.

Attorneys for Jeane Burgos and Carla Van Bastelaar filed court papers Thursday with Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff, stating that their clients were withdrawing their bid to become guardians for 7-year-old Camila and 5-year-old Alec Beresford-Redman "in light of pending court proceedings in Mexico that may affect the court's determination on the petitions."

The children's father, Bruce Beresford-Redman, is awaiting trial for murder in Mexico. The body of Beresford-Redman's 41-year-old wife, Monica, was found in April 2010 in a sewer at the Moon Palace Hotel in Cancun, where the two were vacationing without their children.

The slain woman's sisters filed a petition in August 2011 asking for the removal of Bruce Beresford-Redman's parents, David and Juanita Beresford-Redman, as guardians of the children, saying they had taken steps that favored the interests of their son over those of their grandchildren and that they had provided them inadequate living conditions.

With the filing of the sisters' recent court papers, trial of the guardianship dispute that was scheduled to begin Nov. 26 is now canceled. Their documents state their action is "without prejudice," meaning they could reverse their decision later.
