Redondo's Harbor Update: Sardine Cleanup to Last Through Monday
The surging water has subsided and the sardines are being removed by volunteers, officials, workers and birds.
Cleanup operations in Redondo's King Harbor Marina are expected to last through Monday, with “mop up” detail tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, said Fire Chief Dan Madrigal.
“From that point, we’ll let mother nature do her thing,” Madrigal said.
The water surges as a result of the tsunami from Japan subsided Saturday, allowing volunteers to climb on the rocks and divers to plunge in the water to pick out dead sardines.

Saturday was the sixth day of cleanup operations after a large school of sardines died of oxygen depletion Monday night.
Early in the afternoon, Police Chief Joe Leonardi and a crew of volunteers began removing dead fish from the rocks next to sea gulls doing the same thing.

“The community involvement and people’s willingness to help has been phenomenal,” Leonardi said. “They could take the perspective of picking up whatever they can see, but in reality they understand what they are trying to do is protect the environment and the harbor for the summer. They’re moving rocks, trying to get as much as they can out.”
About 45 volunteers helped clean the harbor Saturday, including Corina Chinen, a member of the Nahoa Outrigger Canoe Club based in the marina.
“I really care about our harbor and want to contribute,” Chinen said.
