Power Outages Expected During Edison Upgrades

The $2.2 million upgrade work is expected to last until June with planned power outages for some Rancho Palos Verdes residents.

Planned power outages, lane closures and occasional traffic delays are expected in Rancho Palos Verdes over the next two months as Southern California Edison crews continue work on a $2.2 million utility infrastructure upgrade.

The upgrades, which began this week and will take until the beginning of June to complete, are essential to reliable electricity service in Rancho Palos Verdes, SCE spokesman David Song said in a release.

During the work, Song said some residents will experience planned power outages as well as lane closures on local roads. Residents who will be affected by the power outages will be notified by the company in advance.

During the approximately two months of work, crews will work to replace approximately 150 poles, 57 transformers and 2.75 miles of overhead power lines in an effort to improve grid reliability.

“Installation of this new distribution equipment will help minimize the likelihood of unanticipated and extended outages in Rancho Palos Verdes,” said Marvin Jackmon, an SCE local public affairs region manager for South Bay. “We hope residents will understand that there might be some lane closures and traffic delays throughout the project’s duration.”

The Rancho Palos Verdes improvements are part of SCE's larger $1 billion investment to improve the company's system-wide electricity grid that serves close to 14 million people, Song said.
