Patch Picks: Go Green at Work, School

Looking to green your work routine? Here are a few suggestions.

Whether your child is going back to school or you're spending another day at work, it's easy to "green" your routine. Here are some suggestions from Treehugger.com:

Cut down on your paper use—go digital. Nevertheless, it's not always possible to do that, so when you buy printer paper or notebooks, buy paper with at least 30 percent post-consumer recycled content that is processed chlorine free. Print double-sided. For scrap paper, use the back of a rough draft that you don't need or the last couple of pages in a notebook of scribbles.

Brown-bag your lunch—without the brown bag. Carry your lunch in a reusable, washable bag, and package your food in reusable containers. Use a stainless-steel water bottle if you bring a drink; if you enjoy a soda, recycle the can.

Carpool, walk, bike or take the bus. It saves gas, and in the case of biking or walking, lets you spend time outdoors while giving you exercise. Some employers even give their workers discounted bus passes or a small stipend, and students who take the bus get to spend more time with their friends.

Lights out. Turn off the lights when you step out of a room. When you're not using the printer, unplug it, or use a smart power strip that automatically cuts power to devices that have been turned off.
