Man Electrocuted While Trimming Tree

A man trimming a tree in the Lower Abalone Cove area of Rancho Palos Verdes is electrocuted, knocking out power to nearly 2,000 Southern California Edison customers.

A blackout affecting about 1,800 Southern California Edison customers in southeast Rancho Palos Verdes on Saturday afternoon was caused by a man who was electrocuted when he was trimming a tree, according to the city of Rancho Palos Verdes.

According to an email from city staff, the man was working for a private property owner in the Lower Abalone Cove area near the intersection of Packet Road and Sea Cove Drive when he made contact with a power line running through the tree.

"Tragically, the man was killed in the accident," which occurred at about 2:15 p.m., city staff wrote in an email to residents.

While power was only out momentarily for some customers, others were left without power for several hours. Edison crews expect power to be fully restored at about 9 p.m. Saturday.
