Ground Turkey Recalled

Consumers are urged to check their homes for recalled ground turkey products. The turkey can be found in several California stores.

Millions of pounds of ground turkey products have been recalled following a that killed one person in California and affected nearly 80 others across the country.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday released a report urging people to check their homes for recalled products.

Cargill Meat Solutions Corporation, a Springdale, Arkansas, establishment, recalled approximately 36 million pounds of ground turkey products that may be contaminated with a multi-drug resistant strain of salmonella.

The products are sold under the following brand names: Honeysuckle, Riverside, Kroger, Safeway, Giant Eagle, HEB, Aldi’s Fit & Active Fresh, Spartan and Shady Brook Farm, according to the California Department of Public Health.

Stores in California where these brands might be found include WinCo, Kroger, Food4Less, Foods Co., Ralphs and Stater Bros, according to the state health department.

According to the state health department, the affected products have "use by" dates from Feb. 20, 2011 through Aug. 23, 2011. Ground turkey products are sold in chubs, tray packs or institutional packages. The products are labeled as 85 percent, 90 percent or 93 percent fat and may be found in ground or patty/burger form.

"We have suspended ground turkey production at our Arkansas facility until the source [of salmonella] can be pinpointed and actions to address it are taken. Public health and the safety of consumers cannot be compromised," said Steve Willardsen, president of Cargill’s turkey processing business in a statement Wednesday. "We are closely examining every aspect of our production process and have identified enhancements to our procedures in our efforts to ensure safe food. Eliminating food borne illness is always our goal."

Symptoms of Salmonella Heidelberg include, stomach cramps, fever, nausea (sometimes vomiting), diarrhea, dehydration and fatigue.
