Rock & Brews, co-owned by Jon Mesko, restauranteur and hotelier Michael Zislis and rockstar Gene Simmons, plans to open in Torrance at the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Palos Verdes Boulevard on April 15. The Riviera Village restaurant will offer a selection of 52 beers, gastropub food, a children's play area and even a pet-friendly outdoor dining area. The first restaurant in the chain was opened in El Segundo. The Torrance City Council approved the amended plans for the latest location in December.

Cantina Real, the Mexican restaurant in Hermosa Beach, is expected to open in Manhattan Beach at 924 N. Sepulveda Blvd. The fate of the Cantina Real, which has operated for more than 50 years on Pier Plaza, has been uncertain since the property owner announced that the lot it sits on had been sold to a developer. Real Blais, now 82 and still behind the bar, works with his son and daughter, Steve and Joline.

The Mermaid Restaurant is back in Hermosa Beach, no matter how temporary. Right after the 19th annual Hermosa Beach St. Patrick's Day Parade ended, revelers headed to The Mermaid at 11 Pier Ave. to greet each other and get the party started. The Mermaid Restaurant closed it doors on July 30, 2012, but reopened a few months later. Patrons seem not to care that, like its namesake, the restaurant can appear and disappear like a phantasm.

Palos Verdes Art Center is "new" again. The art center is holding a re-opening on Sunday, noon to 3 p.m., at 5504 W. Crestridge Road, Rancho Palos Verdes. Watch artists create ceramics and glass-blown pieces. "No-host" food and beverage trucks will be on hand.

Shutters:

With Cantina Real moving into its space at 924 N. Sepulveda Blvd. in Manhattan Beach, it appears the American Farmhouse Tavern & Dining Hall is out.
