Prices dropped a penny a day over the past week.

Customers at the pump began to see some relief as gas prices under $4 a gallon began to appear at gas stations across Southern California.

Prices dropped a penny a day over the past week, according to a press release from the Automobile Club of Southern California.

In the Los Angeles-Long Beach area, the average price for self-serve gasoline is $4.189 a gallon, a nearly 8 cent drop from the previous week, but $1.08 more than last year.

“It’s great to see prices coming down relatively quickly, but prices are still more than a dollar higher than a year ago,” Auto Club spokesperson Jeffrey Spring said. “Nationally, Memorial Day travel is expected to stay at about the same level as last year—most likely a result of the gas price hikes this spring.”

According to Mapquest.com, the cheapest gas in the nation is in Roswell, NM at $3.39, while the most expensive gas is in Kaunakakai, Hawaii at $5.42.
