Rare Gray Whale Spotted off Malaga Cove: In a rare end-of-summer event, an adult gray whale was spotted off Malaga Cove in Palos Verdes Estates at about noon Friday. The gray whale migration season off the South Bay usually lasts from December through May.


Marymount Offers $1K Reward for Recovery of Student's Bicycle: A $1,000 reward is being offered for the return of a stolen bicycle that once belonged to a man who died during the 2013 Redondo Beach Triathlon. Detectives with the Los Angeles Police Department's Harbor Division are investigating the theft from a garage in the 3100 block of Barbara Street in San Pedro.

Whale Slams Sailboat off Palos VerdesA whale struck a 31-foot sailboat about 2 miles off the Palos Verdes Peninsula early Monday afternoon, damaging the vessel. 

Exit Exam Pass Rates Dip in PVPUSD: Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District 10th graders performed slightly worse on the California High School Exit Exam than the previous year's class, with 97 percent passing the math portion and 96 percent passing the English section, according to test results released last week.

Boston Bombing Survivor Comes Home: Hollywood Riviera resident John Odom, who suffered nearly fatal injuries when bombs exploded near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, returned to Los Angeles on Friday—a return highlighted by his ability to walk off the airplane that carried him home.

Pier to Pier Friendship Walk Planned For Next Month: Skechers USA, Inc. has announced that the television station Nickelodeon will sponsor the footwear company's fifth annual "Pier to Pier Friendship Walk" to benefit children and young adults with special needs. Since its inception in 2009, the event has raised $1.9 million for local education programs and the The Friendship Circle.

Firefighters Will Compete in Tests of Endurance in Hermosa Beach: Firefighters from around the country will be in Hermosa Beach to compete in the Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge, a physical endurance competition to promote fitness within the firefighter community.

Hermosa Beach Trucker Collared in North Dakota DUI CrashA North Dakota news agency reported Sunday that a Hermosa Beach man crashed his big rig into another truck in a Fargo parking lot and drove away, eventually getting caught and arrested.

Manhattan Beach

Mistake at Root of Major Power Outage in Manhattan BeachA backhoe working on the site of the new Manhattan Beach library triggered a major power outage in the city Thursday around 3 p.m., said City Manager David Carmany. Some 3,566 Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach homes and businesses were impacted by the 2:41 p.m. construction mishap, said Nancy Rodriguez Casanova of Southern California Edison.

Manhattan Village Redevelopment Moves Forward; Two More Public Hearings Set
: Time is running out for Manhattan Beach residents and community members to voice their opinions about the Manhattan Village mall redevelopment project. Two more public hearings will be held on Sept. 10 and 17.

'Beach Cruiser' Bank Bandit Pleads Guilty to Manhattan Beach Robbery: Manhattan Beach Police detectives used "old-fashioned" detective work to track down the suspect. Their efforts resulted in his capture after he was recognized by someone who'd seen a "Wanted" poster in a nearby community.

Burglary Suspects on Ocean Drive Caught on VideoMore photos capturing alleged burglars in Manhattan Beach neighborhoods were released Thursday by the police department. The latest photos released show two suspects going south on Ocean Drive on a skateboard and scooter.
