Redondo Beach

Suspect to Stand Trial in Redondo Double Homicide: The man accused of killing a Redondo Beach woman and her teenage daughter in February 2012 will stand trial on two counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances, a judge ruled Thursday.

Police Arrest Galleria Battery Suspect in Lawndale: Police arrested a man Saturday night in Lawndale on suspicion of battery and petty theft in connection to an incident at the South Bay Galleria in North Redondo Beach, authorities said. The man attempted to steal something from a store in the mall, but a loss prevention officer stopped him, according to Sgt. Jeff Mendence of the Redondo Beach Police Department.

Redondo Police Launch New Community Alert System:
The Redondo Beach Police Department announced Tuesday night at its City Council meeting that it will use the online communication service Nixle to communicate directly with the public.

Probation Officers Pleads Not Guilty in Child Care Scheme:  A Los Angeles County probation officer charged with conspiracy, grand theft and perjury in an alleged $1.6 million child care fraud scheme pleaded not guilty Monday. Redondo Beach resident Frank Elliott Boyd III, 48, his 44-year-old ex-girlfriend and four more co-defendants are accused of urging parents to falsify documents in order to cheat state and county agencies out of child care money.

Manhattan Beach

Small Grass Fire Doused Near 405 Freeway and Rosecrans: A small grass fire on the side of the 405 Freeway was reported at 2:14 p.m. on Saturday, according to the California Highway Patrol log.

Manhattan Beach Celebrates National Night Out: Manhattan Beach Police Chief Eve R. Irvine, Captain Tim Hageman, Crime Prevention Officer Stephanie Martin and Neighborhood Watch volunteer Millie Newton visited 13 blocks in the city during National Night Out Tuesday. Patrol officers and members of the fire department also participated.

Manhattan Beach Junior Lifeguards Win Taplin Relays: More than 3,700 junior lifeguards participated last week in the International Surf Festival. On Friday, a Manhattan Beach team won the Taplin, an event in which 18-person teams consisting of six runners, six paddlers and six swimmers, compete in a relay format.

City Hires New Public Works Director: The City of Manhattan Beach has hired a new public works director, said David Carmany, city manager. Tony Olmos, who has more than 20 years of experience in operations, engineering, program development and management, replaces former Public Works Director Jim Arndt who retired in May after six years with the city.

Palos Verdes

Police: Resident Interrupted Intruder: A Palos Verdes Estates resident returned home Thursday to find a strange man standing in the bedroom, authorities said. According to an email from Community Relations Officer Marcelle McCullough of the Palos Verdes Estates Police Department, the resident came home at 6:30 p.m. after being gone about an hour.

Weekend Road Work Planned on PVDN:
Drivers on the Palos Verdes Peninsula should expect road closures on Palos Verdes Drive North in Rolling Hills Estates this weekend, according to a notice from the city of Rolling Hills Estates.

Shuttle Service Begins Between Terranea Resort, Riviera Village: The new shuttle service will run regularly from Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes to Riviera Village in South Redondo Beach.The new shuttle stop is located at the intersection of Catalina Avenue and Vista del Mar in front of the Soil Gardening kiosk.

Hermosa Beach

5 to Run for City Council, 2 for City Treasurer: The race is on for three open City Council seats and the city treasurer position in the November election in Hermosa Beach. Current City Council members Jeff Duclos and Patrick "Kit" Bobko have pulled and filed papers to seek re-election. They will face candidates Carolyn J. Petty, Nanette Barragan and Gregory J. Savelli, who have pulled and filed papers.

Three Women Part of November Candidate Field: Two more women are among the candidates for City Council and city treasurer to pull and file their official nomination papers, according to the Hermosa Beach city clerk's office Monday.
