Comments of the Week: "I believe as a community we should ban anything that does not reflect positively toward the children in our community."

A look at what Patch readers are talking about on South Bay and North OC Patch sites.

We take pride in our work here at Patch and always strive to bring our readers interesting news. However, we must admit, sometimes the most interesting part of a great Patch story is the comments from readers that it sparks.

Here are a look at what Patch readers said in the comments this past week.

Seal Beach Puts Clamps on E-Cigarette Vendors

Seal Beach officials enacted a moratorium to temporarily halt the opening of new electronic cigarette shops in the city Monday.

The Beast ! August 27, 2013 at 09:16 PM I believe as a community we should ban anything that does not reflect positively toward the children in our community. If kids see cigarettes for sale they will want to buy them once they are an adult.

Seth Eaker August 27, 2013 at 01:25 AM A disappointing finding for a problem which is not significant in the City of Seal Beach. Every member of the public which spoke on the issue urged council not to implement an urgency ordinance. Though staff may need time to find the appropriate way to determine where e-cigarettes fall in the municipal code, it has created an unfair, undue burden on this one start up business, eVolution. Further, there are 9 other stores which currently sell the e-cigarette and now code enforcement action needs to be taken against those businesses. Not a demonstration of a business friendliness or a willingness to work with a local couple trying to open a small 800 sqft shop. People need to notify their elected officials that this kind of arbitrary use of urgency ordinances to stop legal businesses is an overreaching which will have unintended consequences. I hope staff and eVolution will be able to work together to make their business both permitted and feasible.

Jean Q August 27, 2013 at 12:10 PM It's just steam, not tobacco. You have to leave the smokers something.

Dawn Clayman August 28, 2013 at 11:19 AMWhat's the pros on selling alcohol at the bars in Seal? I think I would rather have people smoking electric cigarettes then have to deal with the smell of traditional cigarettes. Correct me if I'am wrong, I think they add liquid nicotine in the process of making nicotine patches, nicotine gum, and nicotine lozenges.

Study: Long Beach Among Coastal Cities to Disappear Because of Climate Change

With rising sea levels and climate change, The Huffington Post has compiled its Top 14 cities that could simply disappear within the next 100 years and Los Angeles’ Santa Monica, Venice and Long Beach ranked 10th on the list. Patch shared this article with readers. Among the reactions, one suggested it's time to go solar.

John B. Greet August 27, 2013 at 05:49 PM The earth has been warming and cooling, and its tides rising and falling for millennia (aka "far longer than mankind has been around"). This will continue to occur and nothing puny and infant man might attempt will stop it or effect it to any appreciable degree. Sadly, the Huffington Post piece relies at least in part on data and projections offered by the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel On Climate Change (IPCC). Much of the IPCC's previous climate so-called "research" and conclusions have been so thoroughly debunked in the past that it just amazes me that anyone still takes the organization seriously, let alone relies upon anything it has to say for much more than comic relief.

Panglonymous August 27, 2013 at 08:26 PM “Doubt is our product, since it is the best means of competing with a ‘body of fact’ in the mind of the general public. It is also a means of establishing a controversy.” --from a Brown & Williamson (tobacco company) document circa 1969

Mike King August 27, 2013 at 09:20 PM My rudimentary research shows that water may be lapping at our Belmont Shore doorstep in 2080. The IPCC is only one of a host of scientific organizations to note sea level rise. But I ain't moving to Modesto, thank you. http://belmontshore.patch.com/groups/mike-kings-blog/p/bp--the-backyard-remodel-chronicles-part-iii-...

Luis August 28, 2013 at 09:19 AM Time to go solar, starting with all city buildings, schools, and all new construction.

AES Redondo Beach Application 'Data Adequate,' Says CEC

Patch reported AES' application to rebuild its power plant on Harbor Drive in Redondo Beach will proceed to the next phase. Commenters chimed in with opinions. What do you think?

David Mallen August 28, 2013 at 09:29 PM Pleased to hear the strong showing by our Redondo Beach City Council, especially the Hon. Mayor Steve Aspel, at the CEC hearing. This is exactly what we need now: unity, civic pride, straight talk, and hardball negotiation.

Joan Barry Yamashiro August 29, 2013 at 12:40 AM We don't want a new power plant. We need this one to go. It's a filthy, noisy, unwanted neighbor. Bad for our children, pets, and the entire neighbourhood.

PVE Police Chief Set to Retire

Patch reported Chief John Eberhard, who became head of the Palos Verdes Estates Police Department in October 2012, will retire Oct. 31. One commenter voiced what she thought of the move.

Donna August 27, 2013 at 07:27 PM Interesting how older fellas get hired in higher paying roles for a year so they can boost their PERS retirements.

Residents Tied Up, Held at Gunpoint as Home Ransacked

Patch reported two Manhattan Beach residents were tied up and held at gunpoint Thursday night as their home was ransacked. The incident was reported in the 1600 block of Fifth Street. One commenter pointed out a recent robbery in the same area. Live in the neighborhood? What have you noticed?

Richard August 31, 2013 at 12:51 PM it's sad to say this but this is the second robber in this area by black males in the last week. It's bad to say this, but if you see a black male in this area- run fast! It's not racist if it's true.
