An anonymous donor added $10,000 to the reward fund for information leading to the person who slit a California brown pelican's jaw pouch in Long Beach, officials said today.

The donation brings the total reward to $20,000, according to International Bird Rescue in San Pedro, where the pelican is being treated.

Meanwhile, the Port of Long Beach announced that it was donating $5,000 toward the treatment and rehabilitation of the pelican, which has been nicknamed "Pink" after the color of leg band that was placed on it when it arrived at the center.

"Pink" was found April 16 in the 5400 block of Ocean Boulevard near Bayshore Park in Long Beach. Its pouch was slit, leaving it unable to eat.

The pelican has undergone two surgeries so far -- on Sunday and Tuesday.

Anyone with information about the attack on the pelican was asked to contact the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at (310) 328-1516. The culprit could face up to six months in jail and fines of up to $15,000.

It's a sad perspective when so many PEOPLE are murdered in Long Beach with no reward offered to help find the killers, yet $20,000 is offered to find someone who hurt a BIRD.
