Freedom4U Youth Peer Mentors Make A Difference

“I want to make a place were the kids feel they belong” says high school leader Michelle Frost, “they deserve a place where they have friends and feel welcome, especially at this age.” She is just one of more than 17 youth interns who are becoming peer role models for community middle schoolers.

Michelle, a Peninsula High Junior continues speaking excitedly about an ambitious new program which Freedom4U, a south bay non-profit, has started this past July. They aim to partner high-achieving high school students with middle school youth through team oriented activities across the peninsula.  By showing kids healthy alternatives before the introduction of substances into their social lives, Freedom4U is making a real difference in their perception of the future. According to experts, this precise type of direct connection between the younger side of the community and healthy peers is exactly what keeps the risk of drug introduction and bad situations down.

With meetings occurring once every month and ranging from ice-blocking competitions to water balloon fights these kids really know how to have fun! Currently at an average attendance of about 30, this group is aiming to grow rapidly.

“I think its really the activities that keep them coming back” says Maddy Colli, a PVHS senior and ASB vice president. This is essence of the program, middle school youth learn to look up to leaders for activities that are healthy and exciting. Activities that don't involve illegal substances but do involve an active social scene. Those activities are centered around healthy living are why Freedom4U can not only promote a drug-free environment, but foster one as well.

Freedom4U Director Dr. Greg Allen reports that the high school peer mentors have also led red ribbon week assemblies at middle schools, sharing their personal experience of a substance free life that is positive and fun. Dr. Allen states that; 'future goals for the youth group are to develop leadership skills and service projects. We have high school students representing PV and Pen High. These teen peer mentors are great kids and role models.'
