Palos Verdes Pee Wee Bears Football game against Torrance Panthers

Football is America’s favorite past time these day and here in Palos Verdes we are no exception. Up here on the “Hill,” we are what you call a football culture. Every fall on Fridays & Saturdays you can see droves of people attending these games. We have a very vibrant and historic football program in Palos Verdes, from high school all the way down to might mites.

One team among these football programs made history last Saturday: the Palos Verdes Pee Wee Bears finished the regular season 7-0—but that’s not what made history. Now, if someone were to tell you that a youth football team went undefeated in the regular season that would be impressive in itself, given the amount of talented young men playing the sport here in Southern California. What made history was the fact that they finished the season not allowing an opponent score on them.

“I went back and checked the records and to my knowledge this is the first time in recent Palos Verdes youth football league history that this has ever been done.” said head coach Horace McCoy. “I couldn’t be more proud of these young men, not only as football players, but as individuals and how they conducted themselves this year.”

The Bears have one of the best defenses in recent memory, and that defense is anchored by one of the quickest, strongest, and nastiest defensive lines in youth football.

“They are a thing of beauty to watch, they wreak havoc in the backfield and give nothing up,” said defensive coach Bob Hladek.

Last week at one of the games, I heard a parent from the other team say "They are everywhere, no matter what we do on offense they already know where we are going.”

It’s not only the defense that’s impressive, the Bears have one of the most explosive offenses in Pee Wee football as well.

“This offense has speed, strength, and is very disciplined, that gives us the opportunity to score when we need to.” said Coach Ronnie Seiter.

The precision with which the Bears run their offensive plays is remarkable, when other teams are picking up 5 to 8 yards on a play, the Bears seem to be picking up 12 to 15 yards, effortlessly.

The Bears just finished the regular season and are now primed to make a playoff run starting this weekend against their crosstown rivals the PV Falcon’s. The game is at 2 p.m. at Peninsula High.

If the Bears finished the regular season undefeated and not letting an opponent score on them, can you imagine what they might do in the playoffs? I wouldn’t miss this if I were you. If you want to see some really good football this weekend, come out and support the Bears and all of the PV youth football programs.
