Peninsula High Student Killed in Crash Identified

Annamay Naef, 16, died in an early morning crash Wednesday in Rolling Hills Estates.

A female student was killed Wednesday morning in a single-vehicle accident near Hawthorne Boulevard and Palos Verdes Drive North.

Annamay Rebecca Celine Naef, 16, of Rolling Hills Estates, died in the early morning crash in Rolling Hills Estates. She was a junior at Peninsula High.

Naef was a passenger in a car driven by another Peninsula High student when the car hit a pole as they headed to school about 8 a.m.

Mitzi Cress, the high school's principal, said it was a "sad day" and that grief counseling had been set up for students and staff.

"We wish to express our deepest condolences to the family for the terrible loss of their precious daughter and fellow Panther."

In an email sent by Cress late Wednesday to students and parents, she said "today we experienced our worst nightmare."

"I would like to thank our district administrators, counselors and psychologist who dropped everything to support Peninsula High for the entire day," she said in the email. "The outpouring of support from the entire PVPUSD community has been tremendous. I have received calls from Chadwick School, St. John Fisher, Rolling Hills Prep, the City of Rancho Palos Verdes, and our many local mental health professionals who have offered support and services. This is a community that comes together in a time of crisis.

"This is a tragic loss for our entire school community."
