Lloyd Wright's Moore House Demolished

The historic home was demolished Wednesday after Palos Verdes Estates City Council members denied a Los Angeles Conservancy appeal of the demo.

A Palos Verdes Estates home designed by renowned architect Lloyd Wright no longer stands at 504 Paseo del Mar after Palos Verdes Estates City Council members OK'd its demolition Tuesday night.

The home was demolished Wednesday after Palos Verdes Estates City Council members denied a Los Angeles Conservancy (LAC) appeal of the demo, LAist reported.

The design, known as the Moore House, has been in the spotlight since the owner years ago expressed interest in tearing down the home to build a more modern, Mediterranean-style house, similar to the style of many in the city.

A final, approved environmental impact report (EIR) concluded the project would "result in significant and unavoidable impact to the existing historic residence," according to a city report.

The LAC appealed the decision to allow the home's demolition during Tuesday night's council meeting, however the appeal was denied by council members.

"The EIR failed to identify and evaluate a single reuse alternative that would maintain the Moore House’s eligibility as a historic resource. This is a clear problem, as the EIR must include at least one true preservation alternative," the LAC said in a statement on its website.

The LAC added in testimony Tuesday night that, "two of the five objectives—calling for a new home that meet the owner’s personal aspirations and of a design within the Mediterranean style—are so narrowly defined and subjective as to essentially eliminate and limit any possibility of their being met by a preservation alternative and outcome."

The home, completed in 1959, featured "dramatically angled roof overhangs, walls clad in locally quarried Palos Verdes stone," and large windows to take in the ocean view, according to the LAC.

According to a city report, the Moore House will likely be replaced with a 5,935-square foot, two-story single-family residence with an attached garage.

Wright's additional projects in Palos Verdes include both and the "Bird of Paradise" House in Rancho Palos Verdes.
