City Seeks Public Input on Possible Dog Beach

The Rancho Palos Verdes Recreation and Parks Department asks for feedback from the community regarding a potential dog beach near Trump Golf Course.

Rancho Palos Verdes officials want to know what residents think of turning what is already informally used as an off-leash dog beach into the real thing, as council members consider a proposal to change an existing city ordinance and OK the pooch-friendly beach.

The city's Recreation and Parks Department is asking for feedback from the community regarding the potential off-leash beach on Rancho Palos Verdes Beach, located below Trump National Golf Club and accessed through Founders Park.

Though city ordinances currently prohibit dogs on beaches and golf courses within the city, and require dogs to be leashed while in public parks, there are often dogs off leashes with their owners on the beach.

Rocks and kelp growth in the water currently limit use of the beach for swimming and surfing.

In August of last year, Rancho Palos Verdes City Council members directed staff to research dog beaches, including whether an off-leash beach would be best for the city.

Residents can send feedback to the Recreation and Parks Department at parks@rpv.com, or call the department at 310-544-5260.

Take the poll below to let us know what you think of the potential dog beach.

Apparently "Trump Beach" has been an offleash dog park for some time with no apparent problems. Why change something that works well now? If an ordinance needs to be changed, then do it. In so far as a name, it has been Trump Beach, leave as Trump Beach. How can it be better identified? I don't have a dog. Why not change Ocean Trails Drive to Trump Dr as well.

I see very few problems with dogs on this beach. There is always a concern for cleanliness, health and safety. Limiting numbers may be wise but probably not financially worth enforcing.

the dog beach issue is officially out of control! Unfortunately this amazing natural preserve is being destroyed daily and is no longer safe for children, beach-goers, native animals or dogs!
With numbers now reaching the hundreds on any given day, the impact to this natural space is ever present. The local environment (i.e. tide pools/hillsides/native animals) is being disrespected with human/animal feces and the dog beach is commonly left trashed. With no trashcans, bathrooms, signage, emergency access or regulations, visitors are left to do as they please. There are many local alternatives for dog lovers, such as nature walks and a soon to be regulated dog park in Palos Verdes. Please consider the impact that thousands of people will have upon this stretch of coast if word continues to spread throughout Southern California via Internet reviews, word of mouth, etc….
Help our community oppose the possibility of this becoming a sanctioned dog beach by making your voice heard.
R.P.V council is currently gathering feedback from local community to make a ruling Feb-March, 2012… ACT NOW

You must be joking. Thousands of people? Have you ever been to that area? On most weekends, its dozens of people at best. During the week, probably much fewer.

Also, reveal yourself. Don't hide behind the name "Concerned Citizens". Who are you?

Con’s to Proposed R.P.V- Dog Beach

- No longer safe for children, beach-goers, native environment or dogs.

- Heavy impact on local environment. (Tide pools, native animals, plants, hill sides, run off, etc…)

- Concern for health issues & possible spread of disease

-Not legal – all dogs must be on a 6 ft leash according to R.P.V municipal code 6.20.010

- Greater Los Angeles County also prohibits dogs on any beach, why should this be an exception?

Currently Ocean Trails beach has none of the following
- No Lifeguard = possible drowning
- No trash cans = trashed preserve
- No regulations = chaotic setting
- No bathrooms = human/dog feces and disease
- No signage = do as you please attitude
- No emergency access = slow response for accidents

No dog beach = A safe enjoyable place for residents, visitors and local environment.

Concerened Citizens....Greater LA county DOES permit dogs on beaches....in Long Beach so your information is incorrect.

Also, how does removing dogs solve the problem of no lifeguard, no trash cans, no regulations, to bathrooms and no emergency access? Without dogs, people will still be on this beach and have those same issues.
Your last line says your true meaning which is NO OUTSIDERS ....and people will still come without dogs, and from other neighborhoods. There are public access laws.

Currently There is no lifeguard, so people can still drown, with or without dogs.
Currently, there are no trash cans now, so the preserve must already be trashed.
Currently, there is no regulation now...so it must be a chaotic setting.
Currently, there are no bathrooms now, so the site must be overflowing with feces and disease!
Currently, there is no signage, so there is a do as you please attitude (god forbid we do as we please in AMERICA, Please pass more regulations and put up more signs!!!)
Currently, there is no emergency access, yet no one has died.

But somehow, just adding dogs into this mix means the end of the world for you? I'm sorry, I fail to follow your logic, or lack thereof!

Leash Off L.A.

See the latest article from PV Patch:
Palos Verdes Beaches Remain Among L.A's Healthiest
Interesting that a beach which had been an unofficial "Dog beach" for decades, rates an A grade while our Redondo Beaches (for people only) get grades from C to F. Once again showing that the RPV City council rescinded their off-leash study and monitoring based on no scientific fact whatsoever. Write to the RPV city council CC@RPV.com and bring the study back.
